A Letter from Southwest Virginia Community College
May 29, 1998
Mr. Otis
L. Brown
Chairman
Commonwealth Competition Council Commonwealth of Virginia
P.O. Box 1475
Richmond, VA 23218-1475
Dear Mr.
Brown:
We were pleased
to receive your Privatization/Competition Manual and
wanted you to know how we support the efforts of the
Council. In 1994, Southwest Virginia Community College
privatized its physical plant operations through Johnson
Controls, Inc. We are the only community college in
the Virginia Community College System with a privatized
physical plant. Johnson Controls has done an outstanding
job and the contract has saved the Commonwealth money.
Our Campus
Bookstore is operated by Barnes/Noble and sales have
gone from $300,000 in 1988 to $1,000,000 this year,
improved services and a real win-win situation.
We recently
initiated a Request for Proposal that will privatize
our copying services. We are proposing that a vendor
own, install, maintain and privatize a copying service
that would place 15 digital copiers in buildings across
the SVCC Campus, and the college would in turn pay a
'cost per copy" for such services. These machines will
be copiers, laser printers, with fax machines.
Please know
how we at SVCC are supportive of the privatization initiative.
We have found the relationships built with corporate
partners are invaluable.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Dr. Richard
C. Hudson
Dean of Financial and Administrative Services
